ANWB Medical Drones
ANWB Medical Drones is a joint initiative of ANWB and various partners. We are investigating how drones can contribute to delivering healthcare at the right time and in the right place. Healthcare partners such as Erasmus MC and Sanquin are involved in this, and our shared ambition is to use innovative mobility solutions to keep healthcare accessible and available throughout the Netherlands.
Bringing healthcare closer to the patient
At the same time that demand for customised healthcare is increasing, the accessibility of hospitals and healthcare locations is steadily decreasing. We are investigating how the deployment of drones can not only bring healthcare closer to the patient more quickly, but strengthen the links between hospitals and laboratories. This mainly has to do with matters such as transporting blood, medications or diagnostic samples, with the drone taking the shortest possible route by air.
Drone for medical transport
We are using two drones, one developed by Dutch manufacturer Avy and one by RigiTech. Both drones take off vertically, and once it reaches altitude, it continues the flight horizontally. The drone has a special compartment suitable for transporting medical goods that keeps them stable throughout the journey.
The next step
Over the next years, ANWB Medical Drones will test different routes to make sure we can develop a country wide network of medical delivery drones. The first route will be between the hospitals in Meppel and Zwolle to investigate a route over sparsely populated area. The next milestone is to receive certification to fly over rural areas, to be able to fly to all hospitals and other healthcare facilities in het country.
